Surge in Refugees from U.S. Seeking Asylum in Canada

After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s declaration that all refugees were “welcome” in Canada, illegal refugees have been pouring over the US-Canadian border since Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential race, reported the Daily Caller and CBC News.

Although Trump’s recent temporary ban on immigration from designated countries did not affect those refugees already in the U.S., refugees are apparently fearful they will be deported.

Although Canada has some of the strictest immigration laws and migrants are subject to deportation at official border crossings, a loophole in the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement means immigrants are guaranteed safe passage at all other crossings.
