CONFUSION CONCERNING THE LAW (COMMANDMENTS) VS THE TORAH

A few days ago, I received via an email, an article, which compels me to revisit and clarify the distinction between the Law or the Ten Commandments, or what the Lord God also defines as the Testimony, and the Torah (Instructions) written by Moses.

The Law was written by the finger of God on two stone tablets and were immediately stored in the Ark of Covenant.

Exodus 24:12  And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I WILL GIVE THEE TABLES OF STONE, AND A LAW, AND COMMANDMENTS WHICH I HAVE WRITTEN; THAT THOU MAYEST TEACH THEM.

And the Lord God further commanded where the two tablets listing His Law were to be placed, which in turn, indicated its importance and permanency as opposed to the temporary (provisional) status of the Torah of Moses:

AND THOU SHALT PUT INTO THE ARK THE TESTIMONY WHICH I SHALL GIVE THEE…And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and IN THE ARK THOU SHALT PUT THE TESTIMONY THAT I SHALL GIVE THEE. (Exodus 25:16,21)

Those verses above cover the where-about of the two stone tablets containing the Law or Ten Commandment written by the finger of God. Those two tablets was the only content of the Ark of Covenant then and also during the temple period:

THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ARK SAVE THE TWO TABLES OF STONE, WHICH MOSES PUT THERE AT HOREB, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. (1 Kings 8:9)

So the Torah of Moses were never kept in the Ark and got destroyed along with the destruction of the temple!

What Moses was commanded to construct on this earth, were patterned after what are found in heaven: Exodus 25:9,40  ACCORDING TO ALL THAT I SHEW THEE, AFTER THE PATTERN OF THE TABERNACLE, AND THE PATTERN OF ALL THE INSTRUMENTS THEREOF, EVEN SO SHALL YE MAKE IT… [40]  AND LOOK THAT THOU MAKE THEM AFTER THEIR PATTERN, WHICH WAS SHEWED THEE IN THE MOUNT.

The Ark which is kept in heaven most certainly do not contain Moses writings, not even a single alphabet! Thus we read: Matthews 6:10b  “…Thy will be done IN EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.

Moses spent forty days and night on the mountain as described below:

And the LORD said unto Moses, WRITE THOU THESE WORDS: for AFTER THE TENOR OF THESE WORDS I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel. (Exodus 34:27)

Note: “AFTER THE TENOR OF THESE WORDS” means “FOLLOWING THE DIRECTION OF THE COMMANDMENT”! Let us look at the content of the Moses’ Torah:

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, IF A SOUL SHALL SIN THROUGH IGNORANCE AGAINST ANY OF THE COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD CONCERNING THINGS WHICH OUGHT NOT TO BE DONE, AND SHALL DO AGAINST ANY OF THEM: If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering. And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock’s head, and kill the bullock before the LORD. (Leviticus 4:2-4)

If you continue reading Leviticus 4, you will know that the Torah of Moses contained instructions on how transgressions against the Lord God’s Law or Ten Commandments were to be recompensed! But these all ended with the First Coming of the Lord Jesus as the Messiah.

Moses did forewarned the Israelis concerning the coming of the Lord JesusMessiah:

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; UNTO HIM YE SHALL HEARKEN; …I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, AND WILL PUT MY WORDS IN HIS MOUTH; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS, THAT WHOSOEVER WILL NOT HEARKEN UNTO MY WORDS WHICH HE SHALL SPEAK IN MY NAME, I WILL REQUIRE IT OF HIM. (Deuteronomy 18:15,18-19)

The Psalmist made prophetic uttering which described the role of the Lord Jesus the Messiah; His first coming mission which the Judaic Jews refuse to acknowledge to their own loss:

Psalms 40:6-10  Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

“IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME” was mentioned by the Lord Jesus as follows: For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: FOR HE WROTE OF ME. (John 5:46)

Why did Paul said the following admonishment in the book of Galatians:

Galatians 5:4  CHRIST IS BECOME OF NO EFFECT UNTO YOU, WHOSOEVER OF YOU ARE JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW; YE ARE FALLEN FROM GRACE.

Another version says: Galatians 5:4  YOU WHO ARE DECLARED RIGHT BY TORAH HAVE SEVERED YOURSELVES FROM MESSIAH, YOU HAVE FALLEN FROM FAVOUR.

WHY?

FOR IT IS NOT POSSIBLE THAT THE BLOOD OF BULLS AND OF GOATS SHOULD TAKE AWAY SINS. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, BUT A BODY HAST THOU PREPARED ME: IN BURNT OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES FOR SIN THOU HAST HAD NO PLEASURE. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.  Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. HE TAKETH AWAY THE FIRST, THAT HE MAY ESTABLISH THE SECOND. BY THE WHICH WILL WE ARE SANCTIFIED THROUGH THE OFFERING OF THE BODY OF JESUS CHRIST ONCE FOR ALL. (Hebrew 10:4-10)

Back to Moses at the time he received the two stone tablets from God, and he (Moses) started writing the book of instruction (Torah).

And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he (Moses) did neither eat bread, nor drink water. AND HE (the Lord God) WROTE UPON THE TABLES THE WORDS OF THE COVENANT, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. (Exodus 34:28)

Then what happened to the Torah of Moses?

Deuteronomy 31:24-26  And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, TAKE THIS BOOK OF THE LAW, AND PUT IT IN THE SIDE OF THE ARK OF THE COVENANT of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

“PUT IT IN THE SIDE OF THE ARK OF THE COVENANT”

To be perfectly clear, let me quote the same verses of scripture from another version:

Deuteronomy 31:24-26  And it came to be, when Mosheh had completed writing the Words of this Torah in a book, until their completion, that Mosheh commanded the Lĕwites, who bore the ark of the covenant of YHWH, saying,  “Take this Book of the Torah, and YOU SHALL PLACE IT BESIDE THE ARK OF THE COVENANT of YHWH your Elohim, and it shall be there as a witness against you,

All verses of scripture I have quoted for this devotional pointed to the temporary (provisional) nature of the Torah (Instruction) of Moses.

The Law or Ten Commandments are kept in the Ark of Covenant in heaven, the earthly shadow (copy) is currently buried somewhere along with the Ark of Covenant constructed by Moses!

After all these years, why all of a sudden, there is a movement called “Back to Hebrew Root?”

When we look closely at this “new kid on the block” behaviour, it started when Judaic Jews got converted into believing in the Lord Jesus as Messiah. Well, we all applaud such a conversion for after all, are they not the people chosen by God, to begin with?  But, with this, the age old problem, faced by apostle Paul, came to the surface again!

These converted Jews, throughout their lives, have been brought up, in the rabbinical tradition. They are not accepting the fact or believing what the bible says concerning a change in the priesthood as I have shared in the following article:

FOR THE PRIESTHOOD BEING CHANGED, OF NECESSITY THERE TAKES PLACE A CHANGE OF LAW ALSO.

Thus, I said, as it was in the early years of Christianity, the following misunderstanding came up and is repeated at present time. I know, I was a part of a Messianic Assembly in my current home town :

Acts 15:1,5  And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, EXCEPT YE BE CIRCUMCISED AFTER THE MANNER OF MOSES, YE CANNOT BE SAVED…[5] But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, THAT IT WAS NEEDFUL TO CIRCUMCISE THEM, AND TO COMMAND THEM TO KEEP THE LAW (Torah) OF MOSES.

Thus, WE WERE TOLD WE ARE STILL ABLE TO KEEP HUNDREDS out of 613 Mitzvot listed as the Torah of Moses, despite the fact that the rabbinical priesthood had been abolished and the temple is no longer standing. But, James (half brother of the Lord Jesus Christ), one of the prominent Elder pointed out:

FOR WHOSOEVER SHALL KEEP THE WHOLE LAW, AND YET OFFEND IN ONE POINT, HE IS GUILTY OF ALL. (James 2:10)

For I TESTIFY AGAIN TO EVERY MAN THAT IS CIRCUMCISED, THAT HE IS A DEBTOR TO DO THE WHOLE LAW. CHRIST IS BECOME OF NO EFFECT UNTO YOU, WHOSOEVER OF YOU ARE JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW; YE ARE FALLEN FROM GRACE. (Galatians 5:3-4)

If you believe the bible as the inspired word of God, according to verses of scripture quoted above, if you do all those rituals, are you saved or not? THINK SERIOUSLY! Your salvation is at stake, here!
