THE TESTIMONY OF A MEDDLING MOTHER

This time,  I am going to discuss about a meddling woman, a mother. Not very often people will readily accepts a meddler.  When one is labeled as  a meddler, it almost always connotes a very negative image upon the one so labeled. But there is meddling and there is meddling, and this particular meddler had a right to meddle and her meddling testified to the truth professed by each and every one of us.

I am going to talk about a highly respected woman, favored by Elohim, and very highly blessed!

Among all of the people of Israel which would have numbered a few millions then, Elohim singled out a young virgin, to give birth to Yeshua Messiah and thereby fulfilled one of the prophesies for the redemption of His chosen people and the people at large.

She was accosted by an archangel Gabriel; a heavenly messenger as described in the Book of Luke chapter 1 verse 28:

And the messenger, coming to her, said, “Greetings, favoured one, the Master is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

Now, don’t try to look at today’s date; we are just going into the month of November 2013. I still possess the full faculty of my mind; I am not delivering a Christmas message, nor do I celebrate Christmas in any official manner, but just to humor my children and grand children in family get together. And we are not Roman Catholics, either!

But I need to show us all, that this particular person or mother was somebody special. She does deserve a lot of respect for what she had gone through in life; she was highly favored and the Lord was with her.

She had performed her duties well, and she did leave a very wise legacy, which most of us; the charismatic included, failed to grasp, failed to listen to and follow. Let us turn to the Book of John chapter 2 verses 1 to 5:

And on the third day there was a wedding in Qanah of Galil, and the mother of Yeshua was there. 2  And both Yeshua and His taught ones were invited to the wedding. 3  And when they were short of wine, the mother of Yeshua said to Him, “They have no wine.”

4  Yeshua said to her, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”

5  His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He says to you.”

These five verses ought to open our eyes, to see:

  1. the testimony of Miryam;  Yeshua’s earthly mother, as to who Yeshua was and is and forever will be;
  2. her compassion,
  3. her humility and good nature, and
  4. her very wise advice which should stand forever and ever for all the human race.

We can find these good qualities of hers in the five verses quoted above.

Now let us review the setting for these five verses. The first verse started with the phrase” on the third day.”

It would seem that three days had elapsed when this particular event took place.

What three days?

Chronologically speaking, Yeshua met with and picked His disciples; Andri, his brother Shimʽon Kĕpha, Philip and Nethanĕ’l in the preceding three days before this wedding party. He was just starting with His earthly ministries. That is the significance of this three days. He might have been making His way to the party and while enroute, He picked His first four disciples.

We are told that Miryam, His mother, was already there. She could have left earlier, to help the host and hostess in the advanced preparation. The host and hostess might have been her near or distant relatives, because we learned that not only Yeshua was invited;  but also, even His newly handpicked taught ones were also there.

It might have been a big party in terms of the number of guests attending. If Yeshua could attend the party with a bunch of newly met taught ones; the number of guests accommodated by the celebrating family, could very well exceeded the number of guests they had originally invited and expected to come.

These party-crashers caused a humiliating blow to the supply of wine they had originally calculated to be more than enough. Midway through all the laughing and singing and horsing around, the wine casks ran out of juice!

Every family member panicked. Here I am just employing the author’s freedom: they might have ran all over the kitchen looking for any hidden cask or bottle. They might even try to locate the cooking wine to accommodate the drunken and loud requests for more wine.

Miryam the mother of Messiah also got into the act. She was part of the family (she had to be). Her heart went out with the last drop of wine, and the commotions and loud requests for more booze. But she did not panic. She went calmly to her Son and merely said: “They have no wine.”

One simple sentence, which said it all.

What was said in that one sentence?

A lot!

It contained:

Miryam’ S TESTIMONY OF YESHUA’S VIRGIN BIRTH!

First and foremost, that particular sentence told us that Miryam confirmed that her first-born son, who was at that party, was capable of helping out people in dire need.

He was not a wine merchant, and He was not carrying any quantity of wine with or on Him. That was also true with His newly found friends.

So what was she really relying on, when she put forward that request?

A miracle, of course!

What was Yeshua’s response?

Yeshua said to her, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”

So, by His own admission, Yeshua was saying that it was not time for Him to show who He really was, then! He had not started His ministry as yet! He had just collected a mere handful of taught ones, and before Yeshua said a word of teaching, they went to the party!

If that was the case, at that particular time, Miryam had also never seen Yeshua performed any miracle, either. Because up to that time, He had not done any miracle, publicly!

But, even though Miryam had never seen Yeshua performed any miracle; she knew that He was capable of doing it. Why? Because, logically speaking, why would she waste her breath to come to Him and asked Him to help out, miraculously?

This is the beginning of Miryam’s testimony:

With that one sentence, she testified to you and me that Yeshua was a Man and Elohim. She was then, the true authority who could vouch for the true identity of Yeshua the Messiah!

W H Y?

Please take a very special note of what I am going to say next:

  1. 1.    Of all the people living then and now, only Miryam had the first-hand knowledge of how Yeshua, really came into being, and into this world.
  2. Of all the people living then and now, only Miryam who would know first-hand, if Yeshua was really born of a virgin, or without a man or men’s involvement.

Why?

Because she was the virgin chosen to bear this man and Elohim!

She knew her very own condition before and after she was with that particular child. She was chaste, in the true meaning of the word, right until the day she bore the SON of Elohim into this world!

With that one sentence Miryam gave a very strong testimony to you and I and to all people of the earth that Yeshua was born of Elohim, and He was then capable of, and He still is, a miracle performing Elohim! That simple sentence testifies to you and I and all the people of the world, that Yeshua was and still is the true son of Elohim!

What a testimony!

Next, let us review Yeshua’ response to Miryam once again: Yeshua said to her, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”

Yeshua WAS IN CONTROL ALL THE TIME!

What did Yeshua called Miryam, when she interceded for a miracle.

Woman!

She was relegated to a position of a common human being, not His mother!

Miryam was a humble woman. She was not upset to receive a rebuke from her own son, who addressed her, not as mother, but as Woman!

She was rebuked because she was trying to intercede!

This is very important to note!

Why?

Because there is a group of “supposedly believers” that hold a believe that, only through Miryam’s intercession, Yeshua then was willing to perform His first miracle.

They hold a position that, even though it was not time for Yeshua to perform any miracle, He eventually did turn water into wine, only because His mother requested it.

Was it because of Miryam?

Did Miryam turned the key to unlock the Pandora’s box of miracles, so that Yeshua, was then able to start performing miracles?

OF COURSE, NOT!

He could start and in fact had already started showing who He really was, right at the time when He picked up a bunch of taught ones two or three days before the wedding party!

Turn with me to the Book of John chapter 1 starting with the verse 47:

Yeshua saw Nethanĕ’l coming toward Him, and said of him, “See, truly a Yisra’ĕlite, in whom is no deceit!” 48  Nethanĕ’l said to Him, “From where do You know me?” Yeshua answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49  Nethanĕ’l answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of Elohim! You are the Sovereign of Yisra’ĕl!” 50  Yeshua answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? Greater than that you shall see.” 51  And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you shall see the heaven opened, and the messengers of Elohim ascending and descending upon the Son of Adam.”

He had that power before hand, even since He was born or even before He was born. He showed this power to His new found friends, whom He brought to the party!

Yeshua was in control at all time.

Miryam asked Him directly for a miracle, and He answered her request directly, to the benefit of His host.  In that particular event, her request is not any different than if the host asked Him directly, or one of the servants, for that matter!

I do not believe that the host asked Miryam to intercede. Miryam did it out of her compassionate heart! And she knew that her son was divine and could do anything and everything!

Should we pray through Miryam, through other saints, through messengers or what have you? No! Yeshua HIMSELF taught us not to do that!  Even Miryam herself taught us the same thing. I will prove that to you later!

I am going to quote a few verses to support my position which should also be the position of all believers of Yeshua Messiah!

John 14:12-14  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do also. And greater works than these he shall do, because I go to My Father. 13  “And whatever you ask in My Name, that I shall do, in order that the Father might be esteemed in the Son. 14  “If you ask whatever in My Name, I shall do it.

See, in one breath, so to speak, we are specifically commanded to ask in His name and in His name only, twice! When there is a repetition of the same command, it means it is very important!

Not through Miryam! And we are further told that He will do anything whatever we ask Him, in His name, and He will do it because, by doing it He brings glory to the FATHER!

We, a blessed group of people, has received a lot of answered prayers.

We, a blessed group of people, has caused our Adonai to bring a lot of glory to YHWH, our ALMIGHTY FATHER. Because by Yeshua’ own words, we are told that all answered prayers bring glory to our Elohim! The more prayers we bring up in Yeshua’ name, the more glory they will be bring to the FATHER!

Please also note that Yeshua’ promise in regards to asking anything in His name and He will do it carries a pre-condition as well, beloved saints.

John 15:7  “If you stay in Me, and My Words stay in you, you shall ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.

There is another condition for answered prayers.

Adonai will fulfill our requests for sure, with ones that will last. But we need to bear fruit in accordance with the blessing we have received from Him.

John 15:16  “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name He might give you.

As I have said, we have seen a lot of answered prayers.  With the verse above, Adonai stressed our position vis-à-vis, His blessings upon our lives. We are a privileged group of people, because we are counted among those chosen for His glory! But there is a part each and every one of us, has to fulfill; that is to bear fruit, fruit that will last! Blessing through answered prayers have to be channeled to bless others. The Dead Sea is dead because it has no outgoing channel.

He PERFORMED His FIRST MIRACLE BECAUSE He CARED!

“They have no wine.”

With that one sentence, she showed you and me that Yeshua was a very caring person.

As you can see He was not very hot when Miryam asked Him to get involved! His very words were:

Yeshua said to her, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”

In the current jargon, what Yeshua said was: “Hey woman, cool it will you?”

It was not proper for a guest to supply the needed provision, especially when one was the invited guest.

There was no such thing as a BYOB party, in the good old days!

Do you know what BYOB party stands for?

BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE!

Calling His mother “Woman” also connotes His displeasure at being asked to get involved!  Remember that He was then Elohim and Man! Now that was the “man” who was speaking.

That was a statement from a son, to a meddling mother! She was a meddler, wasn’t she?

His immediate reaction was, so what if they ran out of wine? Stop already! Look at those people. Too many of them were on the verge of becoming silly drunk!

But Miryam knew exactly the character or the heart of this son of hers!

Even though Yeshua sort of rebuked her for meddling in His affairs, she knew that Yeshua would not want to see anybody in trouble! She anticipated the best in her Son, because she knew who this son of hers, really was!

She did the next logical thing to do: she prepared the servants with a very good and everlasting advice (see verse 5):

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He says to you.”

“To do whatever He tells us” was true then and is true now, and will be true forever!

She knew without a doubt that with Elohim, one has to ask what one needs. She saw the need, and stated her request.

It is not any different from praying for the need of others.  Like Miryam at the wedding party, some of us will uplift So and So’s needs at a prayer meet. Elohim is no respecter of person; anyone of us can pray and may pray. The answer comes from Elohim out of the goodness of His heart, not on how many words and how good one is, in flowery language one used, in uplifting such prayer.

Miryam said a very short sentence; and it was accepted and answered in due course.

We can learn a very good lesson from this devotion.

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He says to you.”

From this short sentence, we should learn that when we uplift a prayer on behalf of someone, we have to prepare that someone with the same advise as the one Miryam gave to the servants.

The potential recipient of that benefit should be prepared to “do whatever He tells that someone.” In other words, if that someone had not been living right according to His commands, tell that someone to shape up!

But there is another greater and everlasting aspect of this advice of hers!

Miryam delivered her very valuable advice “Do whatever He says to you”, not only to the servants at the wedding feast, but her advice is eternally recorded and can be construed as:

  1. she said that to all apostles,
  2. she said that to all prophets,
  3. she said that to all evangelists,
  4. she said that to all pastors,
  5. she said that to all bible teachers,
  6. she said that to all human beings on earth.

It was a short but a very heavy advice. In it rests the salvation of our souls. Whether we will end up in heaven or in hell is dependent upon our obedience to follow to the letter, her very valuable advise.

In my estimation, I can safely list Miryam’s two great contributions for the human race:

  1. To bear Elohim’s child in her virgin womb and cared for Him to maturity.
  2. To leave a very valuable advice above: “Do whatever He says to you”

Was she a good woman? She was!

Was she great?

I can safely say that! Wasn’t she singled out by Elohim from out of hundred of thousands, if not out of millions of others?

Even the archangel Gabriel addressed her “Greetings, favoured one, the Master is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

What did Miryam said concerning her state of being highly favored by Elohim?

Luke 1:46-48  And Miryam said, “My being makes YHWH great, 47  and my spirit has rejoiced in Elohim my Saviour. 48  “Because He looked on the humiliation of His female servant. For look, from now on all generations shall call me blessed.

In verse 46 & 47 she said: And Miryam said, “My being makes YHWH great, 47  and my spirit has rejoiced in Elohim my Saviour

Her soul and spirit glorified (worshiped) Adonai, and she called Elohim her Savior!

We call Elohim our Savior!

In that respect, is she any different than us?

No!

Is she a regular human being in need of Elohim’s saving grace?

Yes, she was!

For out of her own mouth she said that Elohim was her Savior!

If that is the case then, is she to be worshiped as we worship Elohim? No!

Because she also worshiped Elohim! She said that her soul glorified/worshiped the Adonai! How can she be worshiped?

Even Gabriel accosted her with: “Greetings, favoured one, the Master is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

He just greeted her with a statement of fact that she was highly favored and Adonai was  with her!  She was not divine, but that Adonai was with her as Adonai is with us now!

Her valuable advice was inspired and is recorded for eternity.

Yeshua Himself confirmed that in the following verses:

John 14:15  “If you love Me, you shall guard My commands…

Hebrews 5:8  though being a Son, He learned obedience by what He suffered. 9  And having been perfected, He became the Causer of everlasting deliverance to all those obeying Him…

Matthew 28:18  And Yeshua came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19  “Therefore, go and make taught ones of all the nations, immersing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Set-apart Spirit, 20  teaching them to guard all that I have commanded you. And see, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

That advice was an inspired statement of fact. All men should “do whatever He tells them!” That means you and I as well.

We bless you Miryam, for your testimony concerning Yeshua Messiah our Savior! Thank you for telling us indirectly that only He matters in all aspect of our lives and after lives! May this knowledge be imparted to millions of others who have ignorantly misconstrued your role vis-à-vis the true Master and Savior!

Amen!
